Honolulu/Hawaii is on the south shore of the island of Oahu, a volcanic mass divided into sections by two separate mountain ranges. Both ranges run northwest to southeast: the Waianae range on the western side of the island, and the Koolau range to the east. The Koolau separate the city of Honolulu and its hotel-choked neighborhood of Waikiki from the windward side of the island and the towns of Kailua and Kaneohe. Five million people per year visit the island of O'ahu and the Pacific metropolis of Honolulu. It is no wonder that the island boasts some of the finest hotels and entertainment establishments in the world. It is the land of Aloha, and you'll find the famous Aloha Spirit in many of the fine area accommodations and supporting business'.
You might spend a morning exploring Honolulu's Chinatown, stop for lunch at one of the many excellent Asian restaurants there, then relax on the beach at Ala Moana or Waikiki in the late afternoon when the sun's rays are less intense. Or you might plan tours of 'Iolani Palace and the Mission Houses Museum, eat a picnic lunch on the Palace grounds, spend the afternoon trekking on one of the Hawaii Nature Center's short rainforest trails. Stop at Hanauma Bay for a swim and snorkel, lunch in Kailua, buy ripe fruit at a roadside stand, visit the Byodo-In Temple in Kaneohe and return to Waikiki.
For full immersion in Polynesian culture, be sure to visit the Bishop Museum (it also has a good planetarium), the 'Iolani Palace and the Polynesian Cultural Center. The Honolulu Academy of Arts offers an excellent collection of art from Asia and elsewhere. Whatever you decide to do, remember not to rush. Outside the city, Oahu is a laid-back island, so relax and take things slowly. . .
