Wellington is located on the south western tip of the North Island and offers all the facilities and advantages of a vibrant city, yet is easy to escape.  It is the world’s most southerly capital and is built on the shores of a spectacular harbour and the suburbs sit on the surrounding hills. It is also called the windy city, and even though that title is well deserved, it must be noted that the windy periods are seasonal and not all the time. Wellington city is lively and has great shopping, restaurants, theatre and bustling nightlife and is well known as the art capital of New Zealand. Many festivals held each year, including the Wine and Food Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival and the International Festival of the Arts. Wellington is also the New Zealand port for the British Global Challenge which is billed as the most difficult of all global yacht races. The area is great if you love being outdoors. It is surrounded by hills, a rugged coastline and one of the most beautiful harbours in the world. Adventure activities include mountain biking, sailing, paragliding, bushwalking and much more.

Outside of the city areas, including the Hutt Valley, Porirua City and Paraparaumu are worth a visit and the Tararua Mountains to the north for example are a great place to go to for beautiful walks through native bush and to enjoy the spectacular mountain scenery. If you prefer the coast, head north to Paekakariki and Paraparaumu both of which contain beaches suitable for swimming and surfing if the beaches of Wellington don’t take your fancy. Wellington is conveniently located near a wine growing area thus is popular for wine tours and tastings as well as other activities.
