Tours, capital of Indre-et-Loire dept., situated in W central France, in Touraine, is situated on the Loire River. It is a wine market and a tourist center, with metallurgical, chemical, electrical, clothing, and printing industries. An old Gallo-Roman town, it grew rapidly after the death (397) of its bishop, Saint Martin, whose remains are buried in the Basilica of St. Martin (built 1887–1924). The city of Tours lies at the confluence of the Cher and Loire Rivers. The region, known as Touraine, is famous for its wines, fields of sunflowers, and foremost for its grand chateaux. From its two train stations you can easily jump on a 180 mile per hour TGV to France's Brittany and Atlantic coasts, to the Alps for a weekend of skiing, or off to the Riviera, Spain, or Italy.
