Klagenfurt, capital of Carinthia prov., S Austria, on the Glan River is situated in a mountain lake region; it is a noted winter sports center with a bustling tourist trade and a famous location to learn German in Austria. Notable landmarks include the Lindwurm Brunnen, a dragon fountain, the Wörthersee lake, the warmest European Alpine lake, and nearby Hochosterwitz castle, an impressively fortified castle on a high hill that can only be reached by an ascending spiral path which is fortified with a series of gates.
