Santiago de Compostela is the city where, according to a legend, the remains of the apostle Saint James were found. Nowadays Santiago is the third most important Christian pilgrim centre after Jerusalem and Rome. Situated in the very northwest of the country, some 40km from the coast, Santiago de Compostela is one of the wettest places in Spain. One of the most beautiful of all Spanish cities, Santiago de Compostela has been a travellers’ destination for so long that it boasts the oldest hotel in the world! The city is also the subject of the first guidebook in history – the early 12th-century Codex Calixtinus – part of which details the famous pilgrim route, the Camino de Santiago (Way of St James).

The city’s past is what most visitors frequent the place for. Cathedrals, museums and monuments are scattered everywhere and are one of the main reasons many folk visit. A trip to the ‘old quarter’ is a definite ‘must do activity, with its picturesque winding alleyways, built from local granite. On clear days, the warm, golden hued stone glows in the sunlight and the place is a honeycomb of architectural charm, perfect for exploring on foot.
