Mexico is a large country containing almost 2 million square kilometers. The topography is very diverse, and the climate reflects this fact. The Aztec, a very popular civilization dominated Mexico for nearly 200 years (1345 A.D.-1521 A.D.) and was flourishing when Spanish conquerors arrived in 1519. The Aztecs used an elaborate system of taxing and patronage to subjugate an enormous empire that stretched well into Central America. Their mighty empire came to a sudden and tragic end in 1521, although much of its influence is still present today in the culture of the central plateau region.
