Famous for its dictator Alfredo Stroessner, who was deposed in 1989 after 35 years in power, the country now enjoys a free democracy and you can even learn Spanish in Paraguay. Forty years ago the country did not even have one single traffic light but nowadays it is quite well-developed also outside of its capital Asuncion. But still there are many remote areas never having seen a single tourist which wait to be discovered by you besides taking Spanish courses in Paraguay.
Paraguay is divided in two parts by the Rio Paraguay running roughly north to south through the middle of the country. The east is covered by dense forest, rivers and waterfalls. West of the Paraguay River is the Chaco, a great wilderness marshland with much tropical flora. There you will also find Paraguay’s most interesting sites, including the famous Iguazú and Monday waterfalls. In the west, the scarcely populated Chaco area, consisting mainly of empty plains and forests, provides a habitat for hundreds of wildlife and bird species. After the Amazon, this is America’s second largest forest area, whose national parts and biological reserves are popular among enthusiasts of ecotourism. If you are a fan of wilderness and nature it will be the right decision to learn Spanish in Paraguay: There are 11 national parks and protected areas, the largest of which are in the Chaco region in the north of the country. Birdlife is particularly abundant, and there is also a wide variety of animals.
The climate of this low-lying country is sub-tropical. Summer is hot and humid, with average temperatures in February reaching 35oC. In winter temperatures are extremely variable and it may be cold at night. When taking Spanish courses in Paraguay you should not miss local cuisine. Typical dishes include chipas (maize bread flavoured with egg and cheese) and palmitos (palm hearts).
