Academia Iria Flavia - Spanish language school in Santiago, Spain |
1 - Language School Overview :
Iria Flavia is a small and family-like school so is very easy to contact all the school staff, both teachers and administrative or managerial. Actually, relation with teachers is one of the most important values you will find while you are here. You relate to your teacher in the classroom, but also to other groups’ teachers during coffee breaks or other activities.
You can also join our programme of language exchange with Spanish students. You will see that it is not difficult to practice Spanish with natives and out of the classroom.
All these points sum up to reach our objective: helping you learn Spanish in a relaxed, familiar and entertaining atmosphere.
Most of your course will focus on talking: with your teacher, with other groups’ teachers, in and out of the classroom, during coffee breaks, with our secretary, in the activities and with the guides who will show you Santiago, a beautiful city with a great historic and artistic value, but also a place with a very interesting cultural offer that lasts the whole year and that covers all kind of artistic expressions.
The activities we propose in the classroom are focussed on encouraging the dialogue and the exchange of ideas. We like dealing with current events: they encourage the dialogue as any other, but moreover they are useful to let you talk about them to the family you live with.

2 - Location :
No wonder that Santiago, capital city of Galicia, has been awarded in 1940 with the title of Historical-Artistic Monuments and National Monument, in 1985 with Mankind Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO and in 2000 European City of Culture. The most important monument in the city is the Cathedral. From its beginning in the 11th Century until its end in the 18th Century, it gathers almost all the artistic styles: Romanic, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. There you can find a jewel of the Romanic Style: El Pórtico de la Gloria (the Glory Portico). It is a group of sculptures made by Maestro Mateo (Master Maeto) in the 12th Century. He built the crypt as well, where the mortal remains of St James lie, according to the Christian legend.
Nowadays, it is also interesting to visit the Cathedral to see the “Botafumeiroâ€. It is a very big censer that weighs 60 K and swings all along the Cathedral as an offering to the Saint. You can see this at the end of the Mass, and it is offered every feast from the Catholic calendar, also if a group of pilgrims request that. During the Holy Year, you can see the “Botafumeiro†every day.
You can admire more monuments around the Cathedral: churches, convents, monasteries, and like thirty monumental houses or palaces (Pazos, as we call them here in Galicia).
It has been inevitable that prestigious architects from all around the world such as Ãlvaro Siza, Peter Eisenman or Norman Foster have contributed to make the city more beautiful with their modernist art works.
The cultural offer must be to the service of the thousand of university students, pilgrims and tourists of any kind. The great number of museums and exhibition halls hold all kind of artistic tendencies.
