The Pontifical University of Salamanca(Upsa) was founded in 1940 in order to maintain the old ecclesiastical faculties of the University of Salamanca.The University of Salamanca itself was founded by King Alfonso IX of León in 1219 and was definitevely established,in its twofold royal and pontifical character, by Alfonso X the learned on 8th of May 1254.
The principal site of the Pontifical University is situated in Salamanca, a university city of excellence, in which live more than 40.000 university students. Its streets are full of culture carved in stone, like the House of the Shells(Casa de las conchas) or the Main Square (la Plaza Mayor), and of living knowledge.Furthermore, this city has been converted into a world icon of the teaching of Spanish, and for this reason every year thousands of foreign studentss approach the language of Cervantes in the cobbled streets of Salamanca.
